Golden, crispy, and totally delicious, air fryer sliced potatoes are one of my favorite side dishes. They’re quick to make (less than 20 minutes), versatile and a real crowd pleaser. Once you’ve tried them, I’m sure you’ll be making them on repeat, too!

So often, a meal just needs a simple potato side to make it perfect. And much as I love air fryer baked potatoes, sometimes I need something even quicker. That’s where these air-fried potato slices come in. Crispy-edged, fluffy-inside potatoes in next to no time.

Whether I’m making them to go with a cozy roast dinner, piling them high next to a veggie burger, or adding them to a warm salad, these fried potato slices are always a hit. They make a great alternative to air-fried roast potatoes and air fryer French fries when you need to put dinner on the table in super-quick time.

Why these air fryer sliced potatoes are so good!

Air fryers are practically made for sliced potatoes. The hot circulating air crisps them up evenly with very little oil. They cook much quicker than in a traditional oven and with less mess than pan-frying. Plus, the slices don’t stick together like they sometimes do in a baking tray.

And if you need more reasons to cook potato slices in an air fryer here's why I love them so much:

    • They have super crispy edges with soft, fluffy middles
    • Cook way faster than roasting in the oven
    • Use less oil (but still tastes amazing)
    • Work with all sorts of potato varieties including white potatoes, red potatoes, sweet potatoes and fingerling potatoes
    • You can season them however you like—salty, spicy, herby, cheesy... the choice is yours!

What you’ll need to make fried potato slices

Two potatoes alongside a small pot of olive oil and a small dish containing salt and pepper.

    Ingredients

    • 2–3 medium potatoes (Yukon Gold, Maris Piper or Russets work well)
    • 1–2 teaspoon olive oil
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • Optional extras: garlic powder, smoked paprika, rosemary, grated parmesan

    Equipment

    • Air fryer
    • Sharp knife or mandoline slicer
    • Bowl for tossing

How to make air fryer sliced potatoes

    1. Slice up your spuds

Slice your potatoes thinly (about ⅛ to ¼ inch thick). You don't need to peel them unless you want to.A raw potato cut into slices on a chopping board.

    2. Give them a quick dry

Pat the potato slices with kitchen paper or a tea towel to remove any moisture, then toss the slices in a large bowl with olive oil, salt, and seasonings.Sliced potatoes coated in oil and seasoning, in a blue mixing bowl.

    3. Into the air fryer

Spread the slices across the base of your air fryer basket (there can be a slight overlap, but don’t crowd the basket too much, otherwise your lovely potatoes won’t cook evenly)Potato slices in an air fryer basket.

    4. Time to cook

Air fry for 12–16 minutes at 375°F (190°C). Check on the potatoes and turn them carefully a couple of times during the cooking process. This stops them from sticking together. Cook until golden and crisp.Sliced potatoes cooking in an air fryer basket.

How long to cook sliced potatoes in an air fryer

Sliced potatoes take 12–16 minutes at 375°F (190°C), depending on thickness and how crispy you like them. Thin slices crisp up faster, while thicker ones stay a bit fluffier inside.

    Top Tips

    • Dry them thoroughly before tossing with oil. Damp potatoes = less crisp.
    • Avoid overcrowding the basket. Give them room to crisp up!
    • Try using flavoured salts or spice blends for extra fun.

    Alternatives/Substitutions

    • Sweet potatoes work too - reduce the cooking time slightly.
    • Try using red potatoes, baby potatoes, sweet potatoes or fingerling potatoes for variety.
    • Want ultra-thin chips? Use a mandoline for super even slices.

Reheating and Storing Air Fryer Sliced Potatoes

Leftover slices can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To restore the crisp, reheat them in the air fryer for 3–4 minutes at 180°C / 350°F.

What to Serve with Air Fried Potatoes

These air fryer sliced potatoes are so versatile, they go with just about any main meal dish. Or just enjoy as a snack in their own right, piled into a bowl with ketchup or mayo alongside. I sometimes serve them alongside a crisp salad, or add them to a tuna, onion and tomato salad. Of course, they're also a great accompaniment to meat dishes like air fryer pork steak or air fryer barbecue chicken or chicken sausages.

    FAQs

Do I have to peel the potatoes?

Nope! The skin adds texture and flavour, but you can peel them if you prefer.

Do I need to soak the potato slices before cooking?

You don’t have to (I don’t), but if you want a super-crispy potato, you can soak the slices for 10-15 minutes before cooking. Be sure to thoroughly dry them before tossing them with the oil.

Why are my slices sticking together?

Ensure they’re dried well before adding the oil, and don’t overlap too many in the basket. Turn the slices using a silicone spatula or tongs during the cooking process.
