Brussels Sprouts - without the fuss

I used to avoid cooking Brussels sprouts for a big feast. Not because I don't love them (I do!), but because they always felt like one of those fiddly, last-minute dishes that needed boiling, draining, and a bit of convincing to taste good.

And when you're cooking a big roast dinner, oven space is always at a premium. So if there's a way to use the air fryer to cook a side dish or two, I'm going to go for it. First I tried balsamic Brussels sprouts in the air fryer and they were a great success. So I thought - I wonder if you can cook Brussels sprouts from frozen in an air fryer? And good news, you can! This makes them a great stand-by veg to keep in the freezer, ready to cook when you need them.

How to Make Frozen Brussels Sprouts in the Air Fryer

The air fryer works like a mini oven, blasting hot air around the sprouts so they crisp up quickly while staying tender. All you need is a bag of frozen brussels sprouts, seasoning and oil.

    What you'll need:

    • Frozen Brussels sprouts (no need to peel or chop)
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or your choice of oil)
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • Optional: garlic powder, paprika for extra seasoning
Ingredients for making frozen Brussels sprouts in an ainr fryer, including a bowl of frozen sprouts, salt and pepper and oil.

There's no prepping involved when you buy frozen Brussels sprouts from the grocery store. We'll be air frying them whole so there's no need to peel or chop them, they're simply ready to go.

Toss the frozen Brussels sprouts with olive oil (or your preferred oil), salt and pepper. No need to thaw!

Spread them out in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Air fry for 10 minutes at 375°F (190°C), then give them a really good shake. Cook for another 8-10 minutes until the edges are crispy and golden.

Check the sprouts are cooked all the way through by cutting one in half. Then taste and adjust the seasoning if needed and serve right away.

How long do frozen Brussels sprouts take in an air fryer?

From frozen, Brussels sprouts take around 18-20 minutes at 375°F (190°C). Smaller sprouts will take a little less and larger ones may need an extra minute. Keep an eye on them towards the end of the cooking time - and check that they are soft in the middle before serving.

What to serve with Brussels sprouts?

Brussels sprouts are a classic accompaniment to roast dinners. You can serve them alongside an air fryer turkey crown for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Or with a roast chicken at any time of year. Add other veggies like parsnips, carrots - and of course, plenty of roast potatoes for a meal everyone will love!

Top tips for air frying frozen Brussels sprouts

    • Don't overcrowd: Give the sprouts space for the air to circulate so they crisp evenly.
    • Add flavor at the end: A drizzle of balsamic glaze, a sprinkle of parmasan or a handful of toasted almonds elevates this dish - making them perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas feasts.
    • Size matters: Check the sprouts a couple of times in the second half of the air frying process as smaller ones may be ready few minutes earlier.

    Rehating/Storage

Got leftovers? Pop them back in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes to crisp them back up. They'll keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Do I need to thaw the sprouts first?

No - straight from the freezer is the beauty of this method.

Can I use fresh Brussels sprouts instead?

Absolutely - just cut the cooking time down to around 12-15 minutes.

How do I stop them from drying out?

Don't skimp on the oil, and keep an eye on them for the last few minutes of cooking time.
