I love making meals with sweet potatoes. They are a magical ingredient that manages to be both nourishing and comforting. And much as I enjoy making whole baked sweet potato or wedges in my air fryer, sometimes it’s the convenience of frozen sweet potato fries, along with their delicious crispiness, that I crave.

This freezer aisle shortcut means your fries are ready to cook – no peeling or chopping required. This makes them perfect for weeknights when you need to get a meal on the table quickly! Best of all, the makers have already coated the fries to ensure they crisp up beautifully without you needing to add any oil.

Why You’ll Love Making Frozen Sweet Potato Fries in Your Air Fryer

    • Quick and easy – these golden fries go from freezer to plate in just 10 minutes.
    • Crispy every time – There’s not a soggy fry in sight when you use this method.
    • No oil needed – the coating on the fries means you don’t need to add any oil.
    • Easy clean up – No chopping boards, knives or pots needed – just your trusty air fryer!
    • Adjustable portions – whether it’s a tasty snack for one, or a side dish for a family meal, pour out what you need and save the rest for another day.
    • So adaptable – you can serve sweet potato fries with almost anything, or pair with your favorite dipping sauces.
    • Plant-based - Ideal for vegetarian and vegan diets.
    • Family friendly – Sweet potatoes are an excellent ingredient for even the fussiest eaters to try

    • A sprinkle of salt

That’s it! You don’t even need to add oil.

You can use any brand of frozen sweet potato fries from your supermarket’s freezer aisle. I used the Strong Roots brand but you can use whatever brand you prefer.

I like to serve sweet potato fries with a sprinkle of salt and a scattering of fresh herbs but feel free to skip the salt or add any toppings of your choice.

How to Cook Frozen Sweet Potato Fries in Air Fryer

Cooking these tasty French fries couldn’t be more simple.

    1. Open your freezer and grab your bag of fries.
    2. Tip them straight into your air fryer basket (a single layer works best) and air fry at 390F (200C) for 10-12 minutes. Give them a shake halfway through and check regularly towards the end of the cooking time.

    3. Your fries are ready when they’re crisp, golden and delicious.

    4. Serve with your choice of seasonings or sweet potato French fries dipping sauces.

Top Tips for Cooking Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries from Frozen

    • Take the fries out of the freezer right before you’re about to use them - no need to defrost.
    • Place the fries into your air fryer basket in a single layer to ensure they crisp up nicely.
    • Shake the fries a couple of times during the cooking process so they don’t stick together.
    • Remove the fries carefully when perfectly cooked – silicone tongs are best for this
    • Serve right away to enjoy your fries while they’re hot, crispy and delicious!

How Long to Cook Frozen Sweet Potato Fries

I find 10-12 minutes is just about right. But as air fryer models differ, it’s best to keep checking the fries as they cook until they are crispy and perfect. It’s also worth checking the packaging as many manufacturers now give air fryer cooking instructions on the pack to make things even easier.

What to Serve with Air-Fried Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potato fries are versatile and can be served anytime you would serve traditional French fries or potatoes. They make the perfect game-night snack with friends, or a tasty side-dish for a host of family meals. Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy them:

    • Salmon: Check out my other freezer fav – air fryer frozen salmon.
    • Burgers: Choose your favorite beef burger or keep things vegan with a Beyond Burger.
    • Salads: Sweet potato fries make a great accompaniment to a fresh salad.
    • Chilli: I LOVE serving fries with a chilli – they’re perfect for scooping up spice sauces.
    • Loaded fries: Add guacamole, grated cheese, freshly sliced chillies and soured cream to transform a pile of sweet potato fries. Your tastebuds will thank you!
    Are sweet potato fries healthy?

Sweet potato fries are often seen as a healthier choice compared to regular French fries. They contain nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, and fiber. Plus, sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index than regular potatoes, which means they’re better at helping maintain steady blood sugar levels.

Why aren’t my sweet potato fries crispy?

Creating a crispy sweet potato fry is all about the coating. That’s why I love using ready-made frozen sweet potato fries because they usually come with a coating of rice flour (or similar) to give them that crispy finish.

Do you need to preheat an air fryer?

I rarely preheat my air fryer and always get great results. But if a specific recipe calls for preheating, then go ahead. It only takes a few minutes.
