I have a lifelong appreciation of toast. It’s not fancy, but oh my, it's good! It’s the backbone of breakfast, the sidekick to soup, and the base for all things buttery and jammy. And it’s the perfect accompaniment to air fryer hard-boiled eggs. So it’s fair to say that my toaster gets a lot of use. At least it did, until I realised you can make toast in an air fryer oven! Read on to see how I toast bread in the air fryer and discover lots of yummy things to serve with your air fryer oven toast.

Two slices of toast on a plate. Two eggs in egg cups sit beside the plate. Two fresh strawberries are on the side of the plate.

Can you toast bread in an air fryer?

Yes! The best thing about making air fryer oven toast is that you can toast almost any kind of bread – not just toaster-shaped slices. Thick wedges of sourdough, bagels, hot cross buns, muffins, crumpets, burger buns… the list goes on. So why not give it a go next time you’re making toast? Read on for all the top tips for making toast in an air fryer.

Now, at this stage, you might be asking but why? Why toast bread in an air fryer oven when a toaster does a perfectly good job? Well, there are lots of reasons:

Reasons to make toast in an air fryer

    • Fewer gadgets on your countertops: If you have a small kitchen or limited counter space, you might prefer to make toast in your air fryer so that you can have one fewer appliance on your counter.
    • Ease of use: For people with mobility considerations, using an air fryer might be easier than using a toaster.
    • More control: You may find it easier to check the ‘doneness’ of your toast while it’s cooking in an air fryer.
    • More versatile: Your toaster might not be able to handle thicker breads like bagels or muffins. With a spacious air fryer basket you have a lot more options.
    • Melted toppings: When making things like cheese on toast, you can toast the bread in the air fryer until it’s almost done, then add your cheese for the last couple of minutes to let it melt.
    • An option for vacations and dorms: If your accommodation allows you to bring an air fryer, it can be a useful way to make your breakfast (or any time of day) toast.
    • A backup: If you love toast as much as I do, it’s good to have a backup in case the toaster fails.

How to Make Toast in the Air Fryer

    It’s so easy, here’s a guide:

A slice of bread in an air fryer basket.

Pick Your Bread – Thick slices, thin slices, sourdough, bagels, English muffins, brioche, or any bread works!

Arrange the Slices – Lay your bread slices flat in the air fryer basket. For crispy toast, it's best not to overlap slices.

    Top Tip

If your slices are thin and light, they might blow around in the heat of the air fryer. If this happens, you can weigh them down with a wire rack. I sometimes use the metal lid of my cheese grater. (Just remember to lift the metal out using oven mitts or silicone tongs).

Time to Toast – Air fry for 4–6 minutes at 400F (200C), flipping halfway through for that even, golden crispness.

Add your favorite toppings and enjoy - Butter, jam, avocado, peanut butter, anything goes!

    FAQs

How long to toast bread in air fryer?

The perfect timings will depend on the thickness of your bread and how well-done you like your toast. I find 4-6 minutes is ideal for most breads, but it’s a good idea to check throughout the cooking process to get the result you prefer.

Do you need to turn the bread when making toast in an air fryer?

Yes, turning the bread halfway through the cooking time is a good idea if you want it to be evenly toasted on both sides.

What types of bread can you toast in an air fryer?

Your air fryer can toast a wide range of bread types. I often toast bagels, crumpets, sourdough, burger buns and more.

How do you stop bread flying around in an air fryer?

This isn’t usually a problem unless your slices of bread are very light, in which case they may fly up and touch the fan. To stop this from happening you can weigh the slices down with a metal rack (remember to protect your hands by using tongs or oven mitts to remove it).

What toppings are good on toast?

So many things are delicious on toast. My favorite simple toppings include cheese, egg, avocado and peanut butter, but you can experiment with anything you like. Here are some more ideas for delicious toast toppings.
