These air fryer mozzarella sticks are perfect when you’re craving melty, cheesy indulgence and don’t want to wait. And while I love making meals from scratch, sometimes it’s okay to cheat and grab a box from the freezer. That way, you’ll enjoy yummy, crispy-cheesy joy in around five minutes. They’re the perfect finger food for a no-fuss starter, game-night nibble, or part of a tapas spread.

Why frozen mozzarella sticks work in the air fryer

If you're new to the air fryer world, frozen mozzarella sticks are one of the best places to start. No complicated prep, no oil splatters, no waiting around for the oven to heat up. Just pop them in the basket, set the timer, and get ready for melty middles and crunchy, golden crusts in under 5 minutes.

Because they’re pre-breaded and pre-frozen, the air fryer works its magic beautifully—circulating hot air all around to crisp up the outside without drying out the cheese inside. The result? That perfect mozzarella pull and just the right amount of crunch, every single time.

They're pretty much foolproof, which makes them a great confidence booster for beginners. One quick batch and you'll be hooked—trust me!

How to cook air fryer mozzarella sticks frozen style

A box of frozen Mozzarella Sticks

Grab a box of Mozzarella Sticks from the freezer. I got mine in Lidl, but any brand will work. If the box includes a dip, set the dip aside to defrost.

Lay the cheesy sticks in a single layer in your air fryer basket. I popped them on a parchment air fryer liner to make the clean-up easier but this is optional. Air fry at 390°F (200°C) for 5-7 minutes, turning half way through the cooking time.

When your mozz sticks are crispy and hot all the way through, carefully remove them using silicone tongs. Serve right away and enjoy with your favorite dips and sauces.

I find 5-7 minutes at 390°F (200°C) is just right to achieve a crunchy exterior with a soft, gooey cheesy inside.

What to serve with mozzarella sticks

I like to serve them on a bed of peppery leaves or rocket (because balance, right?) or scatter them alongside little bowls of dips as part of a fun sharing board. Quick, satisfying, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Here are some other things that you can serve alongside mozzarella sticks as part of a tapas, buffet or sharing feast:

    Hot & Crispy Bites

    • Mini meatballs – serve with toothpicks and dipping sauce
    • Sweet potato wedges or air fryer fries – the ultimate sidekick
    • Mini spring rolls – crunchy and packed with flavor
    • Chicken wings or tenders – sticky, spicy, or classic
    • Stuffed jalapeños – cheesy with a little kick
    • Onion rings – golden and shareable
    • Air fryer garlic bread - packed with flavor!

    Cheese & Nibbles

    • Cheese cubes or slices – mix soft and hard cheeses
    • Air fryer halloumi bites - such a crowd-pleaser
    • Olives – add variety with green, black, or stuffed
    • Pickles or gherkins – for a tangy bite
    • Cured meats – like salami, chorizo, or prosciutto

    Lighter Options

    • Caprese skewers – mozzarella, tomato, and basil
    • Mini Greek salad cups – fresh, crunchy, and easy to prep
    • Hummus with veggie sticks – carrots, cucumber, peppers

Dips and Sauces for Mozzarella Sticks

Often pre-made frozen cheese sticks come with a dip included in the box. You can speed up the defrosting process by placing the unopened bag or pot in a bowl of hot water while your mozzarella sticks air fry. Alternatively, you can make your own dips. Here are some of my favorite options:

Garlic mayo – creamy with a kick

Plain mayo – simple and smooth

Ketchup – a classic, always welcome

Sriracha – for a fiery twist

Salsa – fresh and zingy contrast

Ranch dressing – herby, cool and creamy

Sweet chili sauce – sweet-heat perfection

Marinara sauce – the ultimate cheesy combo

BBQ sauce – smoky and tangy

Honey mustard – sweet, sharp and deliciously different

    Storing and Reheating

Place any leftover mozzarella sticks into an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 3 days.

When you're ready to enjoy them again, just reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (180°C) for 2-3 minutes - just enough to bring back that melty middle and cripsy coating.

That said, I'll be honest - there's nothing better than mozzarella sticks fresh from the air fryer!
